He dropped out of high school in 1971 to pursue music full time. Throughout the 70s into the early 80s, SRV moved to Austin, Texas shortly after leaving school where the music scene was more active. He played with popular regional bands such as the Nightcrawlers and the Cobras.

He formed his own band in 1977, Triple Threat Revue, which included Lou Ann Barton. After Barton left the band abruptly, SRV would rename the band Double Trouble with Chris Layton on Drums and Tommy Shannon (Johnny Winter) on Bass. The band gained the attention of David Bowie and Jackson Browne during an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982. He would play lead guitar on Bowie’s mega hit album “Let’s Dance”. Browne invited the band to record in his studio and “Texas Flood” was recorded in 5 days. SRV would die tragically in a helicopter crash.
